Community Based Intervention Centre (CBIC)
Malappuram is the district in Kerala with the highest number of children facing physical, developmental, and psychological challenges. Recognizing that these children should never be marginalized or excluded from society, the Community Based Intervention Centre (CBIC) was established at the Edappal Community Health Centre (CHC) as a comprehensive therapy centre.
The centre provides multidisciplinary intervention through the following departments:
Physiotherapy
Speech and Language Therapy
Special Education
Clinical Psychology
Occupational Therapy
CBIC offers comprehensive assessment, therapy, and rehabilitation services under one roof for children with speech and communication difficulties, learning disabilities, developmental delays, memory and attention deficits, autism, and other developmental disorders.
The project was initiated by the Ponnani Block Panchayat under the 2023–2024 People's Planning Programme with the objective of helping children overcome physical and developmental challenges and enabling them to become active participants in mainstream society.
The centre is committed to providing inclusive, equitable, and high-quality services to children with special needs. Its primary objectives are to bridge the gaps in physical and mental healthcare services available to children in rural areas, facilitate the early identification of developmental disabilities, and ensure timely intervention at every stage of a child's development.
CBIC primarily serves children between 0 and 12 years of age who experience physical, developmental, intellectual, or psychological challenges. The centre provides specialized intervention and support for children with:
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
Cerebral Palsy
Quadriplegia
Learning Disabilities
Intellectual Disabilities
Down Syndrome
Emotional and Behavioural Disorders
Memory and Attention Deficits
Developmental Delays
Speech and Language Disorders
Through its multidisciplinary approach and child-centred care, CBIC strives to empower children to reach their full potential, improve their quality of life, and ensure their successful inclusion in family, school, and society.
